A local-boy and a very talented player. The left-back had begun the 2008-09 season well, earning a place on the club's pre-season tour of North America and ultimately marking David Beckham during the MLS All-Stars match in Toronto. Although on the bench for the League Cup tie with Macclesfield Town in August 2008, Widdowson never featured for the West Ham first team in a senior encounter, but also made three loan appearances for Rotherham United during another loan spell in early 2008.

May 2009: Joe Widdowson signed a three-year deal with Grimbsy Town after a successful loan spell at the League Two outfit. The out of contract 20-year-old Academy product made 20 league appearances for Grimsby, scoring one goal.

WEBBER Alf 1939-40 Junior

1939-40 London Junior Football Combination

With the Armed Services continuing to make heavy demands upon the playing staff of football clubs from both amateur and professional clubs during the Second World War. As a national asset, the game must go on, to this end the London Junior Football Combination was set up, with a series of games taking place against other London clubs which included Clapton Orient, Crystal Palace, Charlton Athletic, Fulham, Millwall and Queens Park Rangers.

A match programme from March 1940 reported ...

"Next season there may be even reserve team matches. The players have got to be found somewhere, so it seems youth (and a very youthful youth at that) will have to be recruited to carry on, so if there are any among you between the ages of 16-19, all positions, who to put it in ordinary terms, 'Fancy their chances,' we ask them to write to The Secretary, West Ham United F.C., Boleyn Ground, Green Street, E.13, giving full particulars, i.e, height, weight, age, position, present team, schoolboy and other experience".

At 14 years and 11 months one such budding player was Alf Webber who played for the West Ham Boys team.

(X) Reserves & Youth Who's Who (V) Reserves & Youth WOOTTON David WOOTTON David to Steve

Born: Billericay, Essex 6 April 1994

Position: Goalkeeper

Joined West Ham at the age of 14.

May 2010: David Wootton was highly thought of by our Academy goalkeeper coach Jerome John. He hoped the Academy 'keeper would continue to develop and this could come by him being sent out on loan to gain more experience next season.

The Essex-based goalkeeper has been back-up to Jake Larkins for much of the season, but was forced into action at Staines Town FC against Chelseas after the regular No1 was ruled out with a groin injury. Loans to Southampton and Barnet followed.

February 2012: Trialed with Norwich City

May 2012: Released by West Ham

July 2012: Signed for Chelmsford City
