Vic Niblett first came to prominence with Reading Schoolboys, whom he captained to the seventh round of the 1939 English Schools Trophy. Twice reserve for England U15 Schools, he appeared in wartime football for his local club alongside such names as Matt Busby. Willie Pagan and Maurice Edelston. He turned professional in May 1945 and soon developed into a calm and reliable centre half. After just a handful of appearances Vic joined West Ham in June 1950. but it was only after moving to the Gills in August 1951 that he gained a regular first-team place and he w'as an ever-present (a run of 91 games) until he sustained an injury at Shrewsbury in April 1953. He went on to appear in 164 first-team games until forced to retire in October 1956 after suffering from bouts of concussion. He became the head groundsman and also performed various scouting duties for the club, a role he also held for his first club. Reading, in the 1960s. Vic settled in Gillingham and worked as an estate agent, while he and his wife graduated to gold medal standard in ballroom dancing.
