Callum started his Hammers career as a youth team player at the aged of 14. Graduated from the Academy and signed professionally in the summer of 2011. Named as reserve-team captain for the 2010-11 season, a loan period followed with Bishop's Stortford in 2011 and was rewarded for his hard work with a first-team debut in the Carling Cup first round defeat at Upton Park against Aldershot Town on 24th August 2011. While his West Ham United debut was marred by a red card, McNaughton had bounced back impressively to join AFC Wimbledon on loan with the Football League new boys. The 20-year-old centre-back loan at Kingsmeadow was extended twice where he chalked up 16 appearances in all competitions. The move was made permanent on 6th January 2012, the transfer brings to an end a six-year stay at the Hammers for the defender who overcome a succession of injuries.

Carew was born in Lørenskog, Akershus began his career with his local club Lørenskog, a minor club within the Akershus region. He was considered to be a highly talented youngster and had gained some media attention before he was picked up by Vålerenga in 1997. During the summer of 1999, Carew joined the Norwegian football's most successful club of the past decade and champions league mainstays Rosenborg. After a string of impressive displays in the Champions League, he moved to Spanish club Valencia in a €8.5 million transfer, where Carew managed to win the La Liga title twice. On 22 January 2007, Carew signed for Aston Villa in an exchange deal with Lyon for Milan Baroš. Carew penned a three-and-a-half-year deal at the Birmingham-based club and went on to record 37 goals in 113 league appearances. In January 2011 Villa signed Darren Bent for £18 million, Carew's first team opportunities were reduced and on 6 August 2011 Football League Championship side West Ham United announced the signing of Carew as a free agent. He scored his first goal for West Ham in a 2–2 draw with Crystal Palace on 1 October 2011 and two weeks later scored his last against Blackpool at Upton Park. On 23 May 2012, Carew was released after he did not get a new contract with West Ham.

On 10 August 2011 McCartney returned for another spell at West Ham United for a season-long loan from Sunderland after the arrival  of Martin O’Neill as the new Stadium of Light manager. On 4 March 2012, McCartney scored his first goal for West Ham since his return to the club in a 2-0 away victory over Cardiff City.  At the end of season awards for the 2011–12 season, he was awarded the Players' Player of the Year award. His performances have also helped West Ham clinched promotion back to the Premier League after winning the play-off finals. On 1 July 2012 McCartney rejoined newly promoted West Ham signing a two-year contract after agreeing to make the loan move permanent. In November McCartney suffered a serious knee injury playing against Liverpool. He made his comeback on 30 March 2013 against West Bromwich Albion but lasted only 15 minutes before a recurrence of the same injury which was expected to keep him from playing for the remainder of the 2012-13 season
