1934-35 Season : Charlie Paynter

Spent 50 years with the club, initially as trainer under secretary-manager Syd King, and then as team manager in his own right. Looked upon as a father figure by the players. He was an ideal link between the players and the manager Syd King. Such was his stature in the game that in 1924, he was appointed trainer to the England team for the first international to be played at Wembley. In 1932, following King’s tragic demise, Charlie Paynter was appointed manager of West Ham United. At first, there were some board members who did not want to see Paynter’s appointment, but gradually everyone felt that he could bring together a team good enough to win back Hammers’ place in the First Division. Paynter built a solid side that regularly occupied a top half position in Division Two before the Second World War shattered his ambitions and caused the inevitable break-up of the team. However, Charlie still led Irons to a slice of Wembley glory, winning the Football League War Cup final against Blackburn Rovers in 1940. Paynter was in his late 60s when he asked the Board to engage Ted Fenton (who played in that final) as his eventual successor. He died in his 90s, having seen the man he recommended as his replacement, fulfil that aim of returning the club to the top flight.

Appointed Trainer / Manager 6 November 1932
