1951-52 Season : Ted Fenton

A wing-half in the West Ham first team from 1934 to 1946, East Ender Ted Fenton left Upton Park to become player/manager at Colchester United before returning to manage the Irons. He spent two years learning the job under Charlie Paynter before quietly taking full charge in the World Cup summer of 1950 and implementing the youth policy that would serve West Ham so successfully throughout the next three decades. Most of the credit for the Club’s evolution as a vibrant youth academy, and the development of youngsters such as Bobby Moore, rightly goes to Malcolm Allison, who was Fenton’s captain and tactical guru. Allison ran things his way, although it was Fenton who gave him licence to express his strongly-held views and tactical ideas. Ted’s greatest achievement was the Second Division championship in 1958, returning Hammers to the top flight after an absence of 26 years. After a very creditable sixth place in their first season among the elite, West Ham were struggling when Fenton was sacked in March 1961 and the call went out to Ron Greenwood. After initially issuing a statement that Fenton was on sick leave, it later emerged that he had been dismissed for a behind-the-scenes matter that has never been fully explained.
