1993-94 Season : BILLY BONDS

Legendary player and captain who lifted two FA Cups and made a Club record 793 first team appearances before finally retiring to become youth team manager. Manager John Lyall believed Bill’s vast experience and infectious enthusiasm for the game would rub off on the youngsters but when Lyall was sacked a year later, Bill applied (unsuccessfully) for the vacant first team job, which was handed to Lou Macari. But Bonds, hugely popular as a player, was the People’s Choice to take over the reins when Macari suddenly quit in February 1990. Bonzo experienced a turbulent four-and-a-half seasons in charge, twice gaining promotion but also suffering relegation when the Club’s ill-fated bond scheme proved an unwanted backdrop to a torrid campaign on and off the field. His enthusiasm for the job seemed to be rekindled by the arrival of former Hammers team-mate Harry Redknapp (who, years earlier, had been Best Man at Bill’s wedding) and the new duo guided the side to promotion back to the top flight at the end of their first season together. After a consolidating first term in the new FA Premiership, the Club was plunged into more chaos on August 10, 1994, when Bonds quit. The Board wanted Redknapp, who had impressed with his wheeler-dealer manoeuvres in the transfer market, to take charge of the first team, with Bonzo moving ‘upstairs’ in a newly-created Director of Football role. But Bill declined to compromise his position with the Club he had served with such pride and distinction for 27 years and left in acrimonious circumstances, although the Club did pay up the remaining years of his contract.
