Sam Allardyce was born in Dudley, West Midlands in 1954 and was confirmed as the new manager of West Ham United on 1st June 2011. His wide-ranging experience, first as a player, coach and manager signed a two-year contract with the Hammers and vowed to play ‘attractive football’ in getting the side back to Premier League status. He rejected claims at the time that he played dull, long-ball football at his previous clubs.

Despite signing 12 players in the 2011 summer transfer window he lost his first game in charge at home to Cardiff City by a late goal.

At the end of his first season Allardyce's style of football was brought into question. Fans called for more passing of the ball and that football should be played on the pitch and not in the air. However his management style of play succeed in the end and in May 2012, West Ham were promoted back to the Premier League after just one season in The Championship when they defeated Blackpool in the Wembley play-off Final. Allardyce described the promotion as his best ever achievement.

A busy transfer window in the summer of 2012 saw Allardyce bring in eleven players at the start his West Ham Premiership reign. A Premier League campaign where he promised to play "attractive football," however he reverted once more to "long-ball" tactics which brought criticism from all sides, the fans, the media as well as other managers, most notably from Jose Mourinho after the Hammers’ had drawn 0-0 at Stamford Bridge when he criticised West Ham's football, likening it to ‘football from the 19th century’.

One bright spot for the troubled Allardyce came when he was awarded the Premier League Manager of the Month for February 2014.

in spite of the many protests off the pitch calling for him to be relieved of his position, the club announced on 20 May 2014 that he would remain at the club and he would be given the use of an attacking coach for the upcoming 2014-15 season to "ensure the team provides more entertainment". In May 2014, former West Ham player, Teddy Sheringham was appointed to "improve the club's goal tally".

Allardyce was awarded his second Premier League Manager of the Month award, this time for October 2014 after his West Ham side won three out of four games played in the month. However that was to be his last highlight at the Boleyn Ground, in his remaining thirty-three League and Cup games in charge the side won just nine, the long goodbye finally came down on his four-year reign when the Club announced his contract would not be renewed just moments after the final game of the 2014-15 campaign.

It can be argued that Allardyce achieved what was asked of him, he got the Hammers back into the Premier League and he kept us there.
