Football Books ...

From time to time I get asked what books I might recommend for people to read. Apart from the obvious ones which relate to West Ham United and my insane interest in collecting football memorabilia, here are some of my recommendations. And if your wondering, no I didn't get paid for plugging these books.....

"A couple of books taken on my recent holiday cruise around the British Isles. 'Picking Up The Threads' and 'The Book of Football Obituaries' the latter was particularly poignant and a fascinating read, especially coming so soon after the tragic news that Ex-Hammers Ron Tindall and Jimmy Andrews had both just passed away within a week of one another.

Football Obituaries Picking up the Thread

A light-hearted look at some of the weird and wonderful reasons behind the choice of some of the world's famous and not-so-famous football strips.

Picking Up the Threads is an illustrated look at more than 150 teams - from Brazil to New York Cosmos and Manchester United to Dagenham & Redbridge - and the tales behind their choice of colours.

With entries for every English and Scottish Premier and English Football League club, as well as leading international, foreign and non-league teams, and featuring hundreds of pictures to illustrate the text, it explains the history of various teams football strips and why they wear the colours they do, including an entry on West Ham United.

PICKING UP THE THREADS The Colours of World Football

Whenever a famous footballer dies, there is an inevitable degree ot public grief, depending on the age of the individual and the circumstances of his demise. But a newspaper obituary should never be a leaden announcement of a death. Rather it should be a celebration of a life which has touched countless other people down the years, inspiring hearffelt emotion and endless debate.

The Book of Football Obituaries contains a host of fascinating and diverse characters, from household names whose passing provoked something not far short of national mourning to those who died far too young.

If it necessarily includes a certain amount that is tragic, there is far more that is joyful, to balance the emotional scales. This is a life-affirming commemoration of remarkable achievement within the game, penned by a vastly experienced football writer who for more than two decades has been contributing obituaries to The Independent newspaper

Got, Not Got: The Lost World of Football by Derek Hammond and Gary Silke (and published in conjunction with Mirror Football), is a stunning full-colour hardback A-Z of lost football culture. Beautifully written, crafted and designed, and based on the popular talking point that football was better in the past, Got Not Got evokes the memories of football’s past, its rituals, relics and all those things football fans miss in the modern game.
