ADO Youth Tournament 81_04_30 Aston Villa v. WHU SJFC Final

Born: 13 April 1963, Fulham, London

Position: Striker

 

Born in Fulham, London his family moved to Croydon, Surrey where he attended Lanfranc School. He was in the Croydon Schools teams from under-12 to under-16; the seniors won the Hawke Trophy for London Schools, and Steve had earlier met with other successes. His other sport at school was athletics, where he won medals as a sprinter. He played for Green Star F.C. in a local league, and then joined Redhill Youth.

Signed apprentice forms for the Hammers on 15 October 1979. Two weeks later he was playing in the Reserve team, and scored a Combination hat-trick v. Reading at Upton Park on November 10.

The striker signed professional forms on 13 April 1981 and totalled 62 Combination appearances, scoring 24 goals. A member of the successful 1981 youth side which got to three Cup finals in the space of 16 days. Winning the FA Youth Cup against Tottenham Hotspur the South East Counties League (Div One) Cup versus Norwich City, and picked up a runner-up medal against Aston Villa in the Southern Junior Floodlit Cup.

Steve was released by the Hammers in June 1982.
