The Hammers faced stern opposition against the Japan and Uruguay National sides, Santos (Brazil), Malaysian Tigers and the Japanese champions Yomiuri. The format for the tournament saw each team playing each other in a single group, with the top two placed teams playing off in the Final.

Santos defeated the Hammers 2-1 in Shimizu City, two days later in Okayama the host national side Japan were held to a 2-2 draw, goals from Steve Potts and Dave Swindlehurst. Malaysian Tigers were comprehensively beaten 9-2 with Swindlehurst scoring four, a goalless draw followed with Japanese V2 club side Yomiuri in Sapporo.

The final match in Nagoya ended 1-1 against the national side of Uruguay which left the Hammers third in the table.

The final was held at the Tokyo National Stadium where Brazilian side Santos beat the Uruguay national team 4-2.
